Introducing ecobrick portals
The ecobrick drop off point system doesn’t work. That’s the short answer. I can share the longer one but while you’re still reading let me tell you about its replacement younger sister - the EBE Portal - our new physical interface with you, loyal supporter.
The experience of delivering your well made ecobricks should be one that’s enlightening, fun and inspire continued environmental action. With trained experts to welcome you, Portals will enable the following functions:
Sharing of fresh updates - learn news from our projects and community of upcycling innovators
Quality control - weighing each brick and guiding bottle type
Further waste mitigation - direct visitors to the closest recycling and food waste depot
Rewards program - enter competitions to win exciting prizes
Digital collection status updates
In March this year we were inches away from launching the system until the Covid 19 pandemic halted us. You’ll notice on our website’s Locations Page that the collection status of all portals is PAUSED. With construction projects canceled or postponed the demand for ecobricks fell through the floor and with little storage space we had to hold off on launching.
With strong construction prospects in 2021 we envision activating them soon and enabling more to open in additional provinces.
What to do with your ecobricks in the meantime? Here’s a list of available options:
Hold onto your bricks until our portals open
Make something with the bricks yourself - watch this recent video here for application ideas or register for the webinar I’m hosting on Friday with Afrifest (find registration link below)
<<<warning this might elicit a passionate response>>> Send your bricks to landfill. I know this option sounds harsh but remember each EcoBrick contains millions of potential microplastics that otherwise could very easily have leaked into our environment/ocean. Therefore your efforts will not have been in vain. We strongly encourage the recycling of clear bottles and so if you opt for this option please use green, brown or yellow bottles if possible.
Your assistance with sharing this post would be appreciated.
